Style and Legacy: Princess Grace at the Olympics

As all eyes are focused on Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics, we take a nostalgic journey back to the Rome 1960 Summer Olympics, where Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace made a memorable appearance. Their presence added regal glamour to the already electrifying atmosphere and Princess Grace’s impeccable style continues to inspire spectator style.

A royal connection to the Olympics

The Kelly family had a remarkable Olympic legacy. Princess Grace’s father, Jack Kelly, was an accomplished rower and was the first triple gold medalist in the sport. He won two medals at the Antwerp Olympics in 1920, and his third at the Paris Olympics in 1924. Princess Grace’s brother Jack Kelly Jr., followed in their father's footsteps, earning a bronze medal in the single sculls rowing event at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. Jack Jr. also represented the U.S. in the London Games in 1948, the Helsinki Games in 1952, and the Rome Games in 1960, highlighting the Kelly family's continued Olympic presence and dedication to the sport of rowing.

World-class spectator style

While the Olympic Games are a showcase of athletic excellence, Princess Grace's appearance at the 1960 Rome Games demonstrated that spectator style could be equally captivating. Known for her refined elegance, Princess Grace chose accessories that were both functional and fashionable for her time in the outdoor stadium. One of her more timeless looks included a pair of smart sunglasses and a chic silk scarf - essentials for protection against the summer sun.

Shades of Grace

Her choice of sunglasses not only shielded her eyes but also added an element of glamour. Select a pair of sunglasses based on your desired level of coverage (or anonymity!) An oversized cat-eye like The Georgie or the rounded silhouette of The Frances/The Robie will conceal your eyes and upgrade your look in an instant while a vintage-inspired aviator style like The Mirabeau or The Piscine, is an aesthetically cool choice that reduces eye strain. All Grace de Monaco sunglasses offer 100% UV protection with polarized lenses that improve visibility by reducing glare. Wrap star

Princess Grace’s silk scarf, masterfully tied to cover her head and neck, illustrated how a simple accessory could gracefully frame the face. Our silk scarves are a user-friendly accessory that can be worn in multiple ways. Tie it around your neck for a sophisticated look, drape it over your shoulders as a shawl, or use it as a headscarf to protect your hairstyle against the sun and wind. Princess Grace's world class style continues to inspire, proving that with a few thoughtfully chosen pieces, anyone can achieve a functional and high-level look suitable for any sporting event.
