Grace Kelly and Cary Grant: An Iconic Hollywood Friendship

Grace Kelly found inspiration and solidarity in Hollywood’s arts and actor community that remained influential long after she became Princess of Monaco. The movies have introduced many iconic onscreen duos, but few can match the real-life friendship (and electrifying style) of Grace Kelly and Cary Grant. Their connection began on the sun-drenched Riviera while filming Alfred Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief" in 1954. Grace Kelly, as Frances Stephens, a vision of beauty and poise, and Cary Grant, as John Robie, the epitome of suave sophistication, shared an on-screen chemistry and sartorial allure that captivated audiences. Behind the scenes, their mutual respect and admiration laid the foundation for a lifelong bond. This relationship, and their combined fashionableness, was the blueprint for Grace de Monaco’s The Frances/The Robie sunglasses – timeless frames with star power

Becoming Cary Grant

Cary Grant, born Archibald “Archie” Leach in Bristol, England, began his journey to stardom with a background in vaudeville and stage performance. Moving to Hollywood in the early 1930s, he quickly rose to prominence with his debonair looks, impeccable comedic timing, and magnetic screen presence. Over his illustrious career, he solidified his status as one of Hollywood’s greatest leading men.

Côte d’Azur camaraderie

"To Catch a Thief" marked their only cinematic collaboration, but their friendship extended far beyond the screen. Their time together in the French Riviera created cinematic magic and cemented a deep personal connection through their mutual admiration, shared humor, charm, and professionalism.

I've worked with many fine actresses, but in my opinion the best actress I ever worked with was Grace Kelly. Ingrid, Audrey, Deborah Kerr were splendid, splendid actresses, but Grace was utterly relaxed — the most extraordinary actress ever...” – Cary Grant, Interview Magazine

An enduring friendship

When Grace Kelly transitioned from Hollywood to Monaco in 1956, Grant’s support remained steadfast. Their correspondence continued, with Grant often expressing his admiration for her dedication to her new role. For her wedding to Prince Rainier III, Cary gifted her a French poodle named Oliver, who became a cherished companion in Princess Grace's new life in Monaco. Over the years, Grant’s visits to Monaco were marked by warm reunions with the whole family.

Princess Grace regularly organized charity balls to support her humanitarian work and Cary Grant was often by her side. Inspired by her legacy, Prince Rainier III founded The Princess Grace Foundation-USA, established with the help of friends like Cary Grant. Grant served as a Board Member until his passing. Since 1993, the Foundation has awarded the Cary Grant Film Honor, celebrating emerging filmmakers, including “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu (Film, 2001).

“She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever known. She has the most incredible ESP about me. She could almost read my thoughts. She was cool and reserved and then she’d say something about my own mood or attitude, and it was like she was completely tuned in.” – Cary Grant
