How to Choose a Home Scent

The fragrance you wear is just as personal as the scent you choose for your home. Using a candle or diffuser can instantly change the way that you—and your guests—experience and enjoy your space. A survey by In-Cosmetics Connect showed that floral scents are the most popular for home, and that 43 percent of consumers around the world are looking for home fragrances that help them relax, especially in these post-pandemic years. There are no hard rules (since scent is personal), but here are five things to consider when selecting a scent for your home:

1.The style of your home.

Modern houses lend themselves to woodsier scents while traditional homes call for floral fragrances. Fragrances that smell like a roaring fire or a church altar (yes, this is a trend) are earthy and masculine, and complement an austere environment. Try Grace de Monaco Promenade Sur Le Rocher Large Scented Candle which has notes of musk, wood, and amber. Traditional homes tend to be more feminine, layered, and colorful. A floral scent will add to the cozy ambiance. Try Grace de Monaco Danse Étoilée Large Scented Candle, which blends florals with citrus and rhubarb. Of course, feel free to change things up—the juxtaposition of modern and traditional can make a room feel more daring and stylish.

2.The rooms you wish to scent.

Before you place a candle in a room, think about how you want to feel while spending time in that space. When you’re in your bedroom you want to feel relaxed and/or sexy, so choose a soothing, romantic scent. A kitchen scent should be crisp but light, so as not to overpower the aroma of a roasting chicken or chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven. Bathrooms are where you can go heavy, but choose something clean and fresh. Living rooms are the perfect place for a woodsy scent—something that invites you to curl up on the couch with a glass of wine.

3.The type of event you are hosting.

In addition to emanating scent, candles create ambiance and set the mood. Dinners are more intimate by candlelight, and placing a candle next to your bath can create a soothing, spa-like experience. Sit a candle on your bar during a cocktail party, or in the bathroom with the lights turned down low. Diffusers are more of an everyday scent; they release fragrance evenly all day, which is a boon for busy families with kids and pets. They keep your home smelling sumptuous, without you having to worry about the dog knocking a lit candle over with its tail. Try the Grace de Monaco Porcelain Fragrance Diffuser, which is designed to be customized with your favorite Grace de Monaco scent.

4.The places people will see them.

Designed by interior designer Jérôme Faillant-Dumas, our candles’ white ceramic vessels are decorated with a floral relief pattern inspired by Princess Grace’s own pressed flowers. (Our diffuser is arguably even more dramatic, featuring a sculptural rendering of a floral arrangement.) Place the candles around your home for guests to admire, like you would any objet d’art. Set one on a stack of coffee table books, or tuck one on a tray with a vase of fresh flowers. Nestle them into magnolia leaves to create a festive holiday tablescape. Lit or unlit, they will make your home feel more luxurious.

5. How it makes you feel.

There’s no question that the scent of a candle can help elevate your mood, calm you down, and even make you feel good about doing something good. That’s one of the best parts about a Grace de Monaco candle or diffuser purchase - all of the profits flow to the Princess Grace Foundation to support the Princess Grace Award Grants for emerging artists in dance, theater and film.

Adding a carefully selected scent to your home will elevate your décor—and your mood (research shows that 75 percent of our emotions are triggered by smell). So, think of it this way: You are always just one light or candle away away from happiness. Welcome home.
